We started today by going to the church at 8:30 this morning to be there when the Young Women were to meet to start their activity. Originally it was supposed to be a service project to clean one of the beaches here, but, the municipality didn’t get a hold of the class president as they said they would to arrange which beach and get black bags to put it all in. We found out too late to make other arrangements, but still wanted to have an activity. Therefore, it was decided they could play games, watch a movie and eat the ice cream they wanted for their treat. The girls played Rummikub and the ever popular Spoons card game. They loved both of them.
There were four member girls and two nonmember girls, the Young Women’s president along with Rick and I. We were going to watch “The Other Side of Heaven”, but it wouldn’t play in the player at the church, so we put in “Legacy” instead. It had a real effect on the girls. Part of doing this activity was that they were to stay for the baptism scheduled to 2pm. The Spirit was very strong at this baptism. Nolunthando Donile and her son, Sonwambile Magawu were baptized. Sister Donile wanted Rick to baptize her and Elder Sanders baptized Sonwambile. This was Elder Sanders first baptism and he was a bit nervous, but did very well. The people here are usually not fond of water and Rick had to dunk Sister Donile twice. I don’t think she trusted his strength the first time. They were both all smiles during the whole thing. Except for the cold water, everything was perfect.
Before the services started, when Brother Kondile, one of
the speakers saw President walk in, he made the comment that he looked like and
“old angel” in whites. It was very
funny…
After the meeting was over, as Rick and I were transporting
Sister Donile back to a work meeting she was attending, she told us about the
special experience she had getting transport to the church for her baptism. She
hoped to get transport from the hotel they were holding the meeting at, but none
was available so she needed to hitchhike.
Here, they always stand at the road and hope someone will pick them up,
but being a Saturday and 37K out of town there are not that many vehicles
running. She was concerned about getting
to the church on time. She was out only about 5 minutes when she happened to
catch a taxi going by. Usually, they
wait much longer. The Lord took care of
her. She was grateful to get a ride from
us back to her meeting, smiling all the way there about the feelings she had
from being baptized.
